About PTI

Since 1992, ASCNYC has been designing and delivering innovative peer education and training programs that create the economic, social and health-related building blocks to empower Peer trainees to take control of their lives by improving their health, sustaining long-term recovery from substance abuse, and developing marketable skills. ASCNYC took its pioneering peer training and peer-delivered services “to the next level” by creating the Peer Training Institute (PTI) as an autonomous, peer-run organization that received its 501(c)(3) in February 2014. PTI trainings, community education, referrals, and support services promote recovery, access to care, and improved health among low-income New Yorkers with substance use and/or mental health conditions, HIV, and other chronic illnesses.

PTI offers a six-week Peer Training program designed to enhance the skills and knowledge needed for graduates to succeed in paid internships as Peer Navigators, bringing prevention information to communities at risk, and providing screening, enrollment, health promotion, linkage to care, accompaniment to appointments, motivational interviewing and navigation as members of care management teams.
